The Longest Day Ever!

Yesterday we went to visit Jackson's orphanage in Wuxi. The best development was that I was able to connect with a young woman who has fostered Jackson since last fall. She would play with him on Saturdays at the orphanage and occasionally take him home on the weekends. She was also there with him during his palate repair which is comforting for me to know.

The bad news is that on the three hour ride out to Wuxi Jackson's starting acting sick and writhing in pain, pulling at his mouth etc. This was the first time he has really cried and looking into his little mouth was awful - it looked terrible with white sores along the top of his palate. He is only 4 weeks post op and in the states would still be on a limited diet and wearing arm restraints so he couldn't put anything in his mouth. But I digress. I am pretty sure the repair didn't work b/c when he eats food still comes out his nose.

So I have been couped up at the hotel with a sick, cranky baby that I want to feel better soon. He is just miserable. Hopefully the antibiotics that I received this morning will do the trick. So keep us in your thoughts and prayers that we are feeling good and strong to travel to Guangzhou on Saturday because I would really, really not like to repeat yesterday.

I will post some pictures when we perk up a bit, just wanted to let you all know we are OK and counting down the days to diet coke with ice and our pediatrician at home.

Love,

Tracy & Jackson

Tracy,
What a cutie pie Jackson is, but we all already knew that. I'll keep the both of you (and Laura and Emma, too) in my prayers for healthier days ahead and a safe and quick trip back home to your waiting families.
It's refreshing to know Jackson seems to be adjusting to you as his new mommy.
Can't wait to read more about him and see daily updated photos. Keep your strength up and just remember God has you both in his hands as you complete the final portion of your journey home to your family.

Look how far you've already come on the journey, and just one more week to go! I'm proud of you and Laura...such amazing, strong moms. :)

Oh, poor baby Jackson!! Did the doctor diagnose an infection? It could also be thrush, which would need an antifungal and might be aggravated by antibiotics. I hope you are getting good medical support there!!!

Also, it doesn't necessarily mean Jackson's palate surgery didn't "take". Noah had large globs of food come out his nose for amost six months post-palate repair (done at 17 months old). He just took that long to figure out how to swallow with a roof in his mouth! I've heard many many cases where the children have the same problem for a time after palate repair. So take heart... everything might be just fine!!

We are thinking of you. I can't imagine being held up in a hotel room with busy, not feeling well little boy HOWEVER God is good and will heal this young man and give you the strenght to be there with him the entire time.
Hang in there - We'll see you soon.

Hi Tracy - don't worry - food coming out of his nose is totally normal after palate repair. It may continue to happen (in limited ways) until he has the bone transplant surgery when he's 8 or 9. If you can access it from China you should join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/adoptcleft/ Lots and lots of great advice there on all things cleft.

I hope he's feeling better soon! What a huge set of transitions he's gone through in such a short time!

Do not panic about the repair and things still comming out his nose. it is very very common for cleft repair kiddos to still have things come out there nose. It is no indication of a repair failure. It just takes these kiddos a while to learn how to manage liquids and food from going up into their nasel cavities. So relax and focus on helping him feel confortable.
I speak as a mom to a cleft daughter and as a former cleft nurse. Hang in there.

I'm from BB and just adopted my son, Jackson from Nanjing in March. His CP repair was done here in June, he still has food come out his nose, not to worry. He still eats very little food, mostly soft, and still likes his bottles. He is 18 mos.
Anyway I just wanted to say your son is just too adorable and you both are covered in prayer by another Nanjing mom and a Jackson from Indiana.

Blessings,

Tracy,
I wish I was there to help. Know that you both are in our prayers. Hopefully the medicine is making Jackson more comfortable. You are a strong woman and a very good mother. I plan on spending the weekend with the computer reading more about cleft palates and surgery. Email if you want to talk.
Love you- Gma Peed
